Summary:
Bosko's adventures
as a race car driver.
Description:
We iris in on Honey
reading a newspaper headline that reads "Big Auto Race Today -- Bosko
Entered in Speed Classic". She turns to us and asks "Ain't he
grand?". On the next page is another headline which reads "The
Champion Is Favored to Win", but Honey pooh-poohs that notion. She
puts down the paper, revealing Bosko working on his race car (numbered
lucky 13 of course). As Bosko oils his car we see other drivers tinkering
with their racers, including a dog attempting to inflate a tire with a
bicycle pump, a pig sewing a patch on a tire, another dog trying to crank
his motor but twisting himself and the car instead, and finally the champion
and his incredibly souped-up engine. The champ strikes a match on Bosko's
polished car, leaving a long black streak. Bosko vows to defeat him, and
asks Honey to help him tune up his motor. She does this by going to a
piano and striking a key, while Bosko revs up the engine in the same note.
Bosko is able to get his engine to play Yankee Doodle Dandy perfectly!
The race announcer calls for all cars to line up for the start of the
race, so Bosko cranks up his motor and drives to the track, where he is
greeted by the cheers of the spectators. The flag man attempts to start
the race but his stutter gets the best of him, forcing him to start the
race by shouting "Scram!". The cars zoom off, though a dog on
a pedal-car goes a bit slower. Racing gags include a car so long it has
a second driver on the tail end, and the car behind it that jumps through
circles of backfire smoke. The hood ornament of Mercury is blackened by
the smoke, but a quick dip in the radiator cleans him up. We next get
a look at the aptly-named "Free Wheeling Special", and finally
some shots of the champ and Bosko. The champ pulls out a box of tacks
and tosses it behind him, and every car that runs over it gets a flat
tire, including Bosko's. Bosko pulls over and uses a cat to jack up his
car while he repairs the tire damage. When he's done, Bosko kindly pats
the cat on the head and rejoins the race. Bosko takes a look at how other
drivers have replaced their flat tires, including a car walking with a
crutch, a pig-driven car with a sausage links for a wheel, and another
being pushed by wheelbarrow! Bosko manages to catch up to the champ, but
the wily competitor releases a cloud of black smoke into Bosko's face.
Bosko activates the wipers on his goggles to remove the soot. Bosko tries
to pass the champ, but he's blocked on each attempt. Bosko's car gets
so frustrated that it bites the champ's car in the rear! As the champ's
car leaps into the air in pain, Bosko zooms under it and across the finish
line. Honey presents Bosko with a crown, and after she places it on his
head they kiss. They soon realize that they are surrounded by cheering
spectators, so Bosko has his car backfire a cloud of black smoke into
the air. This obscures the view of the happy couple as they smooch, and
ends the cartoon.
